Personal Reflection on Experiential Learning

By a show of hands, how many of you have taken a class in your major that only assigns busy work? Thankfully, MTSU and other universities have turned to Experiential Learning to alleviate this issue. Today I want to consider the impact of experiential learning, how it met my needs and how I found my experience worthwhile.

I find the impact of experiential learning to be quite significant, because it “puts feet” to the textbook knowledge learned up to this point. However, the class is a safe middle ground between the classroom and the work environment.

Though I was unsure of the class’ workload at first, I found that the class went far and above to meet my needs. Additionally, it allowed me to take ownership of the class by writing for a client of my choosing.

Did I find my EXL experience worthwhile? Absolutely. I learned the importance of creating quality work on deadline. This class also inspired me to pursue a career in publicity for the recording industry.

After considering the impact of experiential learning, how it met my needs and how I found it worthwhile, I came to a simple conclusion: Don’t give students a worksheet.

Give them a deadline.
